What is unique about Musical Moments Studio?

At Musical Moments Studio, students will not only develop all the necessary basic skills required to master any instrument, but they will also experience music as a creative and expressive art. Students will be given a comprehensive understanding of music that will enable them to perform with enjoyment and musicality. Students will be encouraged to become independent learners and taught strategies for efficient learning that they can use in their at-home practice, urging students to become self-motivated. Students will become self-sufficient problem solvers, a skill that will not only help in their music study, but in all aspects of life. Students will learn not only learn how to express themselves through a variety of different styles of music, but they will also receive a comprehensive music education through weekly private lessons and studio events. During lessons, time is spent on technique, sight-reading, ear-training, theory, games, and repertoire. These skills are all important for developing well-rounded, knowledgeable musicians.

How much am I required to practice?

Consistency and quality is the most crucial when it comes to practicing. Generally, beginners should aim for 30 minutes of practice for a minimum of 5 days per week, intermediate students should aim for 45 minutes of practice for a minimum of 5 days per week, and advanced students should aim for 60 minutes of practice for a minimum of 5 days per week. During lessons, the instructor notates that week’s assignments along with any weekly goals or practice suggestions in the student’s assignment notebook. The instructor also discusses with parents and students ways to efficiently practice specific areas of their music. The most important part of practice is developing a consistent habit. Most importantly, find enjoyment in music study! Students should try to put the more tedious aspects of study and practicing in the perspective of how it will help the student achieve the goals they want to reach. Students should embrace what they love about music and use it as a motivator. Applied study and consistent practice involves hard work, but can yield satisfying results.

 

Do I need an acoustic piano for piano lessons? And how often do I need to get it tuned?

While there have been numerous technological advancements in recent years, even the best digital pianos fail to accurately replicate the sound and feel of an acoustic piano. It is highly encouraged that students obtain an acoustic piano. Students may start off with a keyboard initially, but an acoustic piano will be required at some point to continue progressing and encourage the development of further hand strength. The good news is that acoustic pianos hold their value better than digital pianos, so they are a worthwhile investment, even if buying used. Acoustic pianos should be tuned at least once a year, but twice a year is even better! You can find a reputable piano technician at ptg.org. Regular tuning is crucial to the development of the student’s aural training so that the student is trained to hear the proper pitches of each note. Over time, a well-maintained piano will begin to hold pitch better between tunings. Getting regular tunings is worth it, and much more pleasant to the ear!

 

Do I need to pay for books and materials?

Books and materials are to be purchased by the student or the parent as recommended by the teacher. The instructor can purchase materials for the student, but reimbursement is expected.

 

What events and opportunities are provided for students?

The studio schedules a number of events for private students and their parents each year! All of these events are provided at no extra cost, with the exception of the optional theory examinations/performance evaluations.

  • Studio Recitals- Performing in a formal recital setting is an exciting opportunity for students to showcase their hard work and improvement over the year in the presence of their family and friends.

  • Examinations- Students are welcome to participate in theory examinations or performance evaluations through the Ohio Music Teachers Association or “The Achievement Program” sponsored by the Royal Conservatory of Music. These opportunities often require entry fees. Please contact the studio for further information.

 

Why is the annual tuition divided into 12 equal monthly payments?

Piano teaching is the career and livelihood of the instructor. Setting an annual tuition rate allows the teacher to have a regular income all year long. It also makes it easier for students or parents to budget since they know exactly what to expect each month. The annual tuition rate covers much more than just “x” number of private lessons each year, it also includes piano maintenance, recital expenses, professional development for the teacher, administrative/office expenses, games/lesson activities expenses, and much more. All these things allow the teacher to provide students with the best musical education possible.
